Kerala’s out-of-pocket expense in hospitals still among the highest in country

Despite expanded insurance coverage, the expense has remained high in the State, a persistent finding across multiple National Sample Survey rounds for Kerala. Nearly 78% of Kerala’s elderly population reported illness, the highest among States, which could be an indication of its high health-seeking behaviour and higher utilisation of health care and not necessarily worse health outcomes
